Palm Oil Smallholders Revitalization the Case of Golden Agri Resources
20 June, 2021Studies show deforestation from large-scale plantations is declining, but that deforestation from smallholder farmers is increasing. The primary reason fueling the increase is the smallholders’ needs to make ends meet by finding more land to plant additional crops, given their gap of understanding and know-how to maximize efficiency of their existing land. The Participatory Conservation Planning (PCP) program, part of Golden Agri-Resources (GAR)’s enhanced Social and Environmental Policy (GSEP), aims to help smallholder farmers overcome both of these challenges. By doing so, the hope is to halt deforestation in village forests inside as well as adjacent to GARs plantation borders (per regulation, or further beyond as actualization of GAR’s goodwill to prosper together with surrounding communities.
